Carrie Smeltzer was what coaches call a true program runner. She began her high school career running only 30 miles a week and finished running 60 miles a week. Carrie was a three time state qualifier in the 3200m run and was a state medalist three years in a row at the D2 State Finals. Carrie placed 7th in 1999, 5th in 2000, and 4th in 2001. Her lifetime best in the 3200m run was at the 2001 state finals in 11:12.03. Carrie was also the Huron League Champion in the 1600m run in 2001 and the 3200m run in 1999 and 2001. Carrie went on to run in college for Western Michigan University.
